IATA, CANSO and ACI Launch Joint Initiative to Prevent Runway Incursions
The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) and Airports Council International (ACI) have launched a joint initiative aimed at reducing the risk of runway incursions.
A runway incursion is defined as the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle or person on a runway or within its protected area. Several runway incursion incidents in recent years have had fatal consequences, increasing the importance of efforts to improve runway safety.
The Joint Runway Safety Initiative will focus on three main areas: improving safety reporting and data collection related to incidents, near misses and other risk indicators; strengthening local runway safety teams; and sharing lessons learned among airports and organisations with similar operations.
The initiative aims to encourage closer cooperation among airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, regulators and operational teams so that runway safety risks can be identified at an early stage and addressed through coordinated action.
The programme will also support existing global safety frameworks, including the Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Runway Incursions (GAPPRI), developed in cooperation with ICAO, EUROCONTROL and the Flight Safety Foundation, as well as ICAO’s Global Runway Safety Action Plan.
Risk assessment tools, runway safety checklists and support programmes for local runway safety teams developed by IATA, CANSO and ACI will also be used more effectively under the initiative
